Who Is Chuck O'Brien? I’m Boston born and bred, a product of a working class Irish family consisting of five sons who lived and breathed sports 24/7, 365 days a year.

I grew up watching Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and Freddy Lynn at Fenway and Bird, McHale and DJ at the Garden. But by high school my love of sports turned from collecting football and baseball cards to passing out parlay cards to my friends (and a few teachers).

I don’t know if many of you can understand this, but growing up where I did and as I did, gambling on sports was a way of life. I can remember when I was six-years-old my Dad and uncles discussing betting NFL games at Christmas dinner. I knew what a pointspread was and what it meant to cover the number long before I got to junior high. And trust me, “Uncle Billy” wasn’t one of my Mom or Dad’s brothers; he was my pop’s bookie for probably 15 years until he passed away.

I’m not going to lie to you, college wasn’t for me. After high school I went the trade school route and became a licensed HVAC technician. You want to talk about finding gamblers at every turn. My God, all the guys talked about was sports and betting and my opinion was solicited day after day.

So how did I turn into a professional handicapper? Well, you try to make it on $37,000 a year with a wife, two kids and a mortgage in Boston. I was betting – and winning – to supplement my income when it dawned on me that I could make money selling my selections to all the guys who had been hitting me up for all these years for free. I started small, charging $25 a week to about 10 guys. Those 10 turned into 150 within two years. And two years after that I was out of the HVAC biz and a full-time handicapper.

Here’s the interesting part and the reason I accepted Al DeMarco’s invitation to join this site. Eventually I had over 800 clients annually, but I never raised my prices, charging just $25 a week.

That’s right – despite my success, after eight years I was still charging $25 a week. So, when Al DeMarco -- whom I had met in New York back in 2007 after watching him on SNY’s Daily News Live -- told me about this website and how he wanted to bring top-notch handicappers at an affordable price to the masses. Needless to say, I was ready to make the jump.

Am I still a huge Red Sox fan? You can bet a Curt Schilling bloody sock I am. But I don’t bet based on my emotions. You must be emotionless when you’re a handicapper; no favoritism allowed. That’s the key to my success; my ability to separate myself as a fan versus a handicapper.

No ridiculous promises from me; I know as well as you do that no one wins everyday in this business. But you watch this page daily. Watch the winners far outpace the losers. Watch the net profit add up. And watch me make us both money because I’m a player, just like you.

Today's Complimentary Selection:

I’ve got a trio of premium-play winners for you on Saturday, including a pair of college football selections. Keep in mind that I finished last college football season by winning eight of the final 11 Saturdays, closing on a 17-9-2 Saturday run for 135 Dimes.

As for today’s complimentary selection in college football, I’ll take Northwestern as a road underdog at Vanderbilt.

It’s been all downhill for the Commodores since 2008, when they went 7-6, advanced to the postseason for the first time since 1982 and won their first bowl game since 1995. They suffered through a big-time hangover last year, losing 10 of 12 games, including eight double-digit defeats. Then coach Bobby Johnson – after eight years at the helm – up and quit in July. Making matters worse, Vanderbilt – which returned 18 starters last year when it went 2-10 – has just 11 starters back on a team that scored 13 points or less in nine of its 10 losses.

Meanwhile, Northwestern is making strides under coach (and former star player) Pat Fitzgerald. The Wildcats have won 17 of 26 games the last two years, going 7-3 on the road during this stretch. They’ve also covered in eight of their last nine on the highway, including the last five in a row. On the flip side, Vandy failed to get the money in each of its last five home games last year.

Yes, the fact Northwestern is breaking in a new signal-caller on the road in SEC country is cause for concern. However, all accounts are the offense is in good hands with junior Dan Persa, who has been around the program for three years and is much more of a running threat than predecessor Mike Kafka (who led the team with eight rushing TDs last year on just 299 yards).

This preseason quote from Fitzgerald shows just how far Northwestern has come: “I think we have as much competitive depth as we ever had.” On the other hand, there’s nothing competitive about Vanderbilt, which is likely starting at another double-digit loss season.

4♦ NORTHWESTERN (on a 1♦ to 5♦ scale)

Scored with Friday’s baseball comp play on the Rays run-line over Baltimore. Saturday’s complimentary selection on the diamond is another run-line release as I’ll take the Cardinals (-1½ runs) over Cincinnati.

St. Louis snapped a five-game slide last night with a critical 3-2 win over the first-place Reds – the fifth straight win for the Redbirds over their N.L. Central rivals – and now they turn to Adam Wainwright today. Wainwright is in the midst of a rare 0-3 slide (posting an even more rare 5.21 ERA), including two losses to the lowly Nationals and Pirates. But those two particular losses were on the road, where Wainwright is a mortal 6-8 with a 3.15 ERA.

At home, the big right-hander has been a totally different pitcher, going 11-1 with a 1.42 ERA. And with this being a day game, it should be noted that Wainwright is 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA in day action (but just 8-7 with a 2.60 ERA at night). He’s also faced the Reds three times this season – each time in Cincinnati – going 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA, and St. Louis is 4-1 in his last five starts against the Reds (three of the four wins by multiple runs).

Cincinnati’s Travis Wood has hit the rookie wall (10 runs, 17 hits, five walks in his last two starts spanning just nine innings). Now he gets his first-ever crack at the Cardinals … in hostile environs … in a pennant race … against one of the best pitchers in baseball whom you know is going to be determined as hell to get back on track.

2♦ ST. LOUIS (-1 1/2 runs) (on a 1♦ to 5♦ scale)
